WHAT IS WINE? Wine is produced from the juice of grapes. Grapes are pressed and the resulting juice goes through a process called fermentation which produces alcohol. Wine can be red, white or rosé (pink), still or sparkling (like Champagne) and is sometimes fortified (like Port). The grape variety used can have a big influence on how a wine tastes, so too can the place where the grapes are grown and how the wine is matured (sometimes in wooden oak barrels). SELLING WINE Wine can be confusing, but it doesn’t have to be. It’s a great product that can be drank on its own or with food, and more than anything it should be fun and enjoyable, not complicated and stuffy. You have a diverse range of wines which can suit many of your customer’s needs. A FEW IMPORTANT THINGS ABOUT SELLING WINE : 1 You don’t have to love wine to sell it. Selling wine is just part of your job, just like selling other drinks or food. 2 You also don’t need to be a wine expert to sell wine, having a very basic knowledge and being able to describe wine in very simple terms will really help you. Make sure you can confidently recommend at least one white, red and rosé wine, 3 Make sure you can pronounce the wines on your list. If you don’t know how to say it, you will never be able to sell it. 4 Recognise where there are opportunities to sell wine. Food and wine matching is a really great opportunity, for example if there are good fish dishes on a menu then talk about wines that pair well with fish. 5 Make sure that you offer alternatives where convenient, consumers generally want to explore new flavours and tastes and so where the opportunity arises try saying if you love a Sauvignon Blanc styled wine then maybe try this…
